Fundamental analysis

Fundamental analysis is a methodology used to estimate the true value of a financial instrument, such as stocks, bonds or cryptocurrencies, by analyzing economic, financial and other qualitative and quantitative factors. Here is how fundamental analysis is applied in the context of cryptocurrency trading:

1. Analysis of the team and leadership

  • Experience and expertise: check the relevant experience and expertise of the team members. Have they worked on similar projects? Do they have successful projects behind them, and how well respected are they in the crypto community?
  • Online presence: activity on professional networks such as LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter) can provide insight into the team's engagement with the community and the technology (carefully verify that the accounts and profiles are genuine).

2. Whitepaper and business plans

  • Whitepaper: a document that describes in detail the project, its purpose, technology, development roadmap and how it will solve a particular problem. A high-quality whitepaper is key to judging how serious a project is.
  • Business plan: analyze the project's business plan. Is it realistic and achievable? Are the goals clearly defined?

3. Technology and innovation

  • Technological foundation: assess the technology behind the cryptocurrency. Is it innovative? Does it solve real problems? How do experts view it and what do they say about it?
  • Development team: does the team have enough experts to develop and maintain the technology? Are the development plans clearly defined?

4. Market potential and competition

  • Target market: assess the size and potential of the target market. Is there a real need for the solution the project offers?
  • Competition: analyze the competition. Are there similar projects? How does the project differ, and what are its strengths and weaknesses compared to the competition?

5. Tokenomics

  • Token distribution: check how the tokens are distributed. Is there a balance between tokens allocated to the team, investors and the community? The total number of tokens also matters a great deal: for a project with 50 billion tokens to reach a price of one dollar per token, 50 billion dollars would have to be invested in it, whereas for a project with one billion tokens, an inflow of 50 billion dollars would put the token price at 50 dollars. However, this is not necessarily what matters most.
  • Token utility: understand the purpose and use of the token within the ecosystem. Does the token have real value and utility?

6. Community and support

  • Community activity: assess the activity and engagement of the community around the project, as well as its partners outside the crypto community. An active and supportive community can be a good indicator of success.
  • Backing and partnerships: is the project backed by well-known investors, or does it have partnerships with other relevant projects?

7. Regulation and legal issues

  • Regulatory framework: check whether the project meets all relevant regulatory requirements. Are there legal risks that could affect the project?
  • Tax obligations: understand the tax obligations related to trading and holding cryptocurrencies.

8. Financial reports and transparency

  • Financial stability: assess the project's financial stability. Does it have enough funds to achieve its goals?
  • Transparency: does the project regularly publish reports and progress updates? Transparency is key to investor trust.

Fundamental analysis requires thorough research and an understanding of every aspect of a project. The goal is to assess the long-term potential of a cryptocurrency and make informed investment and trading decisions.

Technical analysis

Technical analysis is a methodology used to evaluate investment opportunities by analyzing historical price and trading volume data. Here is how technical analysis is applied in the context of cryptocurrency trading:

Trends and patterns

  • Trends: identifying long-term (bullish – rising, bearish – falling) and short-term trends.
  • Patterns: recognizing patterns such as head and shoulders, double top, triangle, etc. These patterns can signal potential trend changes.

Technical indicators

  • Moving Averages: the average price of a cryptocurrency over a given period. The most commonly used are the SMA (Simple Moving Average) and the EMA (Exponential Moving Average).
  • Relative Strength Index (RSI): a measure of the speed and change of price movements. Values above 70 indicate overbought conditions, while values below 30 indicate oversold conditions.
  • MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): a combination of moving averages that helps identify changes in a trend's strength, direction, momentum and duration.
  • Bollinger Bands: show market volatility. They consist of a middle moving average and two lines placed one standard deviation above and below that average.

Support and Resistance

  • Support: a price level at which demand is expected to be strong enough to prevent the price from falling further.
  • Resistance: a price level at which selling is expected to be strong enough to prevent the price from rising further.

Trading volume

The amount of a cryptocurrency traded over a given period of time. High volume can indicate a strong trend, while low volume can indicate a weak trend.

Candlestick Patterns

  • Bullish engulfing: signals a potential reversal into an uptrend.
  • Bearish engulfing: signals a potential reversal into a downtrend.
  • Doji: an indicator of market indecision; it can signal a trend reversal.

Technical analysis tools

  • TradingView: a popular technical analysis platform offering a wide range of tools and indicators.
  • Coinigy: a cryptocurrency-focused platform that enables analysis and trading across multiple exchanges.

Technical analysis is very useful for short-term traders because it helps identify potential entry and exit points in the market. However, it is important to combine it with fundamental analysis, as well as with other techniques, to get a clearer picture of the market.

Sentiment analysis

Sentiment analysis is a method used to gauge the overall mood or attitude of investors toward a particular cryptocurrency or the market as a whole. It relies on collecting and analyzing data from various sources, such as social media, forums, news and other media, to determine whether sentiment is positive, negative or neutral.

Key aspects of sentiment analysis

Data sources:

  • Social media: X (Twitter), Reddit, Telegram and other forums where cryptocurrencies are discussed.
  • News and articles: analysis of the headlines and content of articles about cryptocurrencies.
  • Comments and reviews: user opinions on various platforms.

Tools and techniques:

  • Text analysis: using natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to analyze tone and emotion in text.
  • Sentiment score: quantifying sentiment numerically, where positive, negative and neutral comments are scored and summed.

Application:

  • Price prediction: positive sentiment can point to a potential price increase, while negative sentiment can point to a decline.
  • Trend identification: tracking changes in sentiment can help identify new trends or shifts in the market.

Advantages and limitations

  • Fast reaction: allows quick responses to changes in market mood.
  • Additional insights: provides information that is not available through technical or fundamental analysis.
  • Subjectivity (limitation): sentiment can be subjective and prone to manipulation.
  • False information (limitation): the presence of fake news and disinformation can affect the accuracy of the analysis.

Sentiment analysis is a useful tool that, when used together with technical and fundamental analysis, can provide comprehensive insight into the cryptocurrency market.

During 2018, I was personally manipulated by fake news, and from a portal that was, until then, quite well known and trusted in the crypto world. Also, on one occasion in early 2019, without checking a Twitter account (today's X), I fell for a scam that cost me a significant amount of funds, precisely because I jumped into a project too quickly and tried to join a staking program with enormous interest rates. That is why it is so important to patiently check and research where and how you invest your funds!
